Engineering Precision: Inside Hexa Limb

A deep dive into the mechanical and control systems behind our modular manipulator prototype.

Hexa Limb began as a question: can we build a manipulator that's precise enough for micro-assembly, yet modular enough for rapid reconfiguration across research projects?

The answer required rethinking joint design from first principles. Each of the six joints uses a harmonic drive paired with a custom torque sensor, enabling both high gear reduction and direct force feedback at every link.

Our compliant control stack runs at 1kHz, adjusting grip force in real time based on tactile feedback. In laboratory tests, Hexa Limb successfully assembled components with tolerances under 50 micrometers — without a single dedicated fixture.

We're now integrating Hexa Limb with Nexus Core to explore autonomous assembly tasks where the robot must reason about part orientation, tool selection, and error recovery — all without human intervention.
